Tirana Legal Aid Society (TLAS) and European Centre have launched the implementation of a newly started 30-months project on “Contributing in the Amelioration of Human Rights Standards in and out the Penitentiary System in Albania”. This programme is financially supported by European Union under the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR/CBSS) 2018-2019 Schemes.

This overall objective of this project is “To promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for persons in conflict with law in Albania through an active involvement of the civil society actors”.

The program, through a multi stakeholder engagements aims at supporting different human rights based initiatives and to strengthen the role of civil actors in promoting a functional penitentiary system of protection and prevention for persons deprived of their liberties and upon release, in full compliance with European standards and recognized international principles.
During the program time frame, activities will include support to marginalized and underrepresented persons in remand and in prisons who seek access to justice, rehabilitation and reintegration support, as well as vocational education and community oriented advocacy. The program is combined by a strong sub grant scheme that is dedicated to support of initiatives and CSOs that are currently working with this target population and seek sustainable actions for safer communities.

 “To advocate and empower the protection of Intersex people from all form of human rights violations”

Tirana Legal Aid Society will implement the project “To advocate and empower the protection of Intersex people from all form of human rights violations,” funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The goal of this project is to integrate Intersex people in the social life with full and equal rights, as every citizen of this country. This projects aims to achieve the following final objectives: Enhancement of the Intersex individuals’ access to justice and other social services; recognition of the Intersex gender in the official documents; improvement of the legislation protecting the Intersex people; and increasing governmental and societal awareness of these rights.

“Empowering people in need through free paralegal services"               1 October 2018 - 31 December 2018

Tirana Legal Aid Society is implementing the project “Empowering people in need through free paralegal services,” supported by the Open Society Foundation in Albania – Soros. This project will last 4 months, October 1st – December 31st 2018, and purports to increase the social involvement of people in need through paralegal services. These services will be offered to children, their families, women, unemployed individuals, and minorities in 170 legal cases.

Tirana Legal Aid Society is implementing the project “Promoting Legal Empowerment for Albanian citizens”, supported by European Citizen Action Service and Open Society Foundation Albania. The grant will be spent for meeting two important objectives giving a model of providing the most efficient legal aid services for many individuals with low incomes and advocating for raising awareness for further development of the legal aid system in Albania.

Project name: “Enhancing the protection of rights of accused in BiH, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania” 

Project Outline

Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in RepublikaSrpska in partnership with The Network of the Committees for Human Rights in Serbia, Helsinki Committee for Human Rights of the Republic of Macedonia, Tirana Legal Aid Society and Center for Legal Aid and Regional Development, implementing the project „Enhancing the protection of rights of accused“. The project will primarily target attorneys-at-law who appear as ex officio defenders of accused before courts, as well as civil society organizations from all five countries that are active in the field of judicial reforms and rule of law. In addition to the above partners, take part in the project are Policy Center of Serbia and the law office Tojic as a representative of the Chamber of Attorneys RS. The overall goal of the project is to contribute to the enhancement of the system of legal protection of accused in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Macedonia, Kosovo, and Albania through a transparent system of appointment, payment and competence ensuring of ex officio legal defense lawyers. The project is financed from USAID through the Balkan Regional Rule of Law Network Program implemented by American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative for a period of 12 months.
